A CSSD Assistant, also known as a Central Sterile Services Department Assistant, is a healthcare professional responsible for supporting the daily operations of the CSSD in a hospital or healthcare facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Sterilization and Disinfection:
Assist in sterilizing and disinfecting medical equipment, instruments, and supplies using various methods such as autoclaving, ultrasonic cleaning, and chemical disinfection.
Packaging and Preparation:
Prepare and package medical equipment and supplies for sterilization, ensuring they are properly wrapped and labeled.
Inventory Management:
Assist in managing inventory levels, tracking stock levels, and ordering supplies as needed.
Quality Control:

Communication and Teamwork:

Job Summary
As a CSSD Assistant, you will be responsible for ensuring the correct packing and sterilization of instrument sets and linen packs for theatre, wards, and doctors' rooms. You will work closely with the CSSD Manager and Theatre Manager to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Shift leading in the absence of the CSSD coordinator
- Assist and oversee safety checks in CSSD
- Gathering stats for processing by CSSD coordinator
- Planning of daily tasks according to theatre slates
- Ordering of linen, consumables, checking of loan sets, and checking sterile stock
- Gathering of supporting documents for processing of invoices
- Report broken instruments and incomplete sets
- Operational duties such as coordinating washing of instruments, packing of sets, loading of autoclaves, and assist troubleshooting SSD related queries in theatres
Requirements
- CSSD experience and training in the private hospital setting
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience in packing of equipment
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including night duty
- Knowledge of medical terminology and instruments
- Awareness of safety protocol
- Adherence to safe standardised loading and unloading of autoclaves
- Minimum qualification – matric – essential
